Two-month-old conjoined boys from Yemen flew to Jordan over the weekend to undergo separation surgery, according to video of their journey.
The twins, Mohammed and Ahmed, were born Dec. 17 conjoined at the rib cage and stomach.
Their father said the family is getting international treatment with the help of UNICEF because of the limited resources of Yemen’s ailing healthcare system.
Yemen has been gripped by civil war for six years, creating what the United Nations called the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
The boys’ 35-year-old mother works as a street vendor in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, UNICEF said.
The agency said “private donors” are covering the cost of the surgery.
“Following weeks of arrangements, we are happy that the twins are now in a hospital in Jordan to be operated on,” said Philippe Duamelle, UNICEF Representative to Yemen, in a statement.
“[The twins] are now in the safe hands of a team of expert surgeons. We hope to see them back soon in Sana’a in good health.”
