Ex-Ohio cop charged in Andre Hill’s murder released from jail

The former Ohio police officer indicted in the fatal shooting of Andre Hill was released from jail Tuesday after posting bail that was lowered to $1 million.

Ex-Columbus police officer Adam Coy walked out of the Franklin County jail where he was being held on charges in the murder of 47-year-old Hill, a black unarmed man that he’s accused of gunning down on Dec. 22.

His release came hours after a judge lowered his bond from $3 million to $1 million because his lawyers argued the excessive amount was unconstitutional, The Columbus Dispatch reported.

Outside, a small group of protesters chanted, “convict that killer cop,” as Coy was being escorted into a waiting SUV, according to the outlet.

Michael Wright, a Hill family attorney, told the Dispatch they were disappointed Coy’s bond was lowered but understood the judge’s decision.

Coy — who is white — was charged with murder after opening fire on Hill when responding to a call that a person in a car had been turning the engine on and off.

Hill, who was inside a garage, approached Coy and other officers while holding a cell phone in his left hand.

Coy then fired at Hill thinking he had a gun, but no weapon was recovered from the scene, authorities said.

The 19-year veteran was fired from the department on Dec. 28 for failing to activate his body camera during the incident and for not providing Hill with medical attention.
