Rep. Jamaal Bowman announced Tuesday that his mother has died from coronavirus.
“It is with deep sorrow that I share the passing of our mother, Ms. Pauline Bowman,” the freshman congressman wrote on Twitter. “She battled Covid for many weeks before transitioning on Valentine’s Day.
“Our mother raised us to live our lives with love and joy with and for each other. I share her legacy with all of you,” he said.
Bowman, a former middle school principal, is a Democrat who represents parts of the Bronx and Westchester.
He upset long-time Democratic incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel in the 2020 Democratic primary, joining “The Squad” of like-minded progressives in the House of Representatives.
