Police in Killen, Alabama say a teacher at the local high school turned herself in following her indictment for allegedly having sex with a student.
According to AL.com, Alabama high school teacher Ashton Alana McCluskey was arrested Wednesday by Lauderdale County authorities for alleged sex with a student.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said McCluskey faces two felony charges of a school employee having sexual contact with a student under the age of 17.
It was announced she was under investigation earlier this year.
McCluskey was listed on the Brooks High School website as a 7th grade math teacher.
The teacher was previously listed on the Brooks High School website as a 7th grade math teacher prior to her arrest for alleged sex with a student.
According to ABC affiliate WAAY, McCluskey did not remain in custody for long on Wednesday.
She posted $50,000 bond and was released from custody the same day.
The seventh-grade teacher was previously indicted by a grand jury in a case investigated by the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations.
This stems from a State Bureau of Investigations probe into the allegations.
Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton previously told WAAY the case of the school teacher accused of sex with a student was referred to the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation due to a conflict of interest.
Supposedly the student involved is a family member of an employee with the sheriff’s office.
“The student is a family member of one of our employees, so for that reason the case was referred to the SBI for further investigation,” Singleton said.
According to NBC affiliate WAFF, the schools superintendent has confirmed McCluskey has been placed on leave following her indictment.
Sheriff Rick Singleton says McCluskey bonded out of the Lauderdale County Jail Wednesday on a $50,000 bond.
According to CBS affiliate WHNT, the charges indicate the student was under 17 when Alabama school teacher allegedly initiated sex.
Other details in the case were not immediately available.
The school system has said it will not comment further on the case pending its outcome.
It was not immediately clear if McCluskey had retained an attorney available for comment.
