Man who slashed two UPS workers on subway held on $75K bond

A Yonkers man who slashed two UPS delivery men on the subway early Tuesday morning was ordered held on a $75,000 cash bond.

Finn Barbuto, 22, has no criminal record and suffers from serious mental illness, said his lawyer Sarah Kaufmann, arguing for his release in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Barbuto was arraigned on one count each of second-degree assault, third-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon.

“In this case, the defendant slashed a random stranger on the subway with a knife,” prosecutor Rachel Schorr told Judge Eric Schumacher, successfully arguing that he be held on $75,000 cash over $225,000 insurance company bond.

The victims got into a squabble with Barbuto on the downtown N train at Lexington Avenue and 59th Street at around 4:55 a.m. Barbuto allegedly slashed both men with a four-inch knife during the fight that spilled from the car onto the platform.

The victims were able to wrestle the knife from Barbuto and detained him until police arrived, according to a criminal complaint.

One man suffered a laceration to his arm and the other to his hand and torso — and the wounds had to be closed with stitches, prosecutors said.

Barbuto is due back in court March 5. The NYPD has said it is beefing up the number of cops on the subways to address a disturbing spike in slashings and assaults on public transportation.

In February, a knife-wielding madman dubbed the “A-train Ripper” fatally stabbed two homeless people.
