Giuliani, the former two-term mayor who also served as former President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, could be a boost for Sliwa in his GOP primary fight with Fernando Mateo.
Mateo, an advocate for taxi drivers and bodega owners, met with Trump last week and made the case for the former president to endorse him.
In the taped phone message sent to GOP voters , Giuliani referred to Sliwa as “my great friend.”
“When I ran for mayor Curtis and the Guardian Angels were there to help me win and then they were there to help me reduce crime and make our city livable again,” Giuiani said.
“And you know what [Mayor Bill] de Blasio did to the city. Ha!’
Giuliani said “we need Curtis”, calling him “the right man, at the right time in the right place.”
“I’m voting for Curtis Sliwa and asking you to do the same.”
Giuliani was, as mayor, credited with driving down crime and helping the city recover from the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. He was once praised as “America’s Mayor” and ran for president in 2008.
But he became a more polarizing figure in recent years, particularly after becoming Trump’s personal lawyer.
In a strange turn of of events, Giuliani, the former US Attorney for the Southern District in Manhattan, is being investigated by the feds from the office he once ran on whether he illegally lobbied on behalf of Ukrainians while attempting to dig up dirt on Trump’s political rivals, including President Biden.
Giuliani maintains his innocence.
Meanwhile his son, Andrew Giuliani, is running for governor.
The primary is June 22 but early voting begins on Saturday.
Responding to Giuliani’s backing of Sliwa, Mateo campaign manager Lou Migliore responded, “Very surprising and disappointing that President Trump’s lawyer is supporting a Never Trump candidate.”
Sliwa endorsed a third party candidate Brock Pierce. a former-actor and businessman, for president last year.
