The $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal that this week took a step closer to being agreed upon includes billions of dollars for New York transit, railroads, airports, highways and more, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday.
Schumer’s punch-list of New York projects that would be funded by the deal — for which debate was to start Thursday in the Senate — includes a “record” $10.7 billion for the MTA, money for new Amtrak tunnels between New York and New Jersey and nearly $1 billion, his office said.
“Whether it’s the needs of the MTA, projects like Gateway, the Second Avenue subway, the East River Tunnels, Penn Access and others, this deal represents massive investments that will rebuild and revive the Empire State’s infrastructure,” Schumer said in a statement.
Schumer’s office provided a breakdown of the monies potentially coming to New York state offices:
- $937 million for New York airports, including $295 million for JFK Airport, $150 million for LaGuardia and $37.5 million for Buffalo-Niagara International.
- $16 billion for investments in Amtrak’s national network, plus another $30 billion specifically for the Northeast Corridor — which includes funds for new Hudson River tunnels, Metro-North Penn Station Access and repairing East River Tunnels.
- $11.5 billion for highway maintenance and construction.
- “Tens of billions” for clean drinking water grants, which New York can apply for.
- $8 billion in grants for Gateway and the next phase of the 2nd Avenue Subway.
- $4.75 billion for transit system maintenance, at least $1.3 billion of which will be dedicated to the MTA.
- $5.25 billion in grants for New York to purchase “clean buses,” a key piece of the MTA’s $51.5 million modernization effort.
- $2 billion statewide for transit accessibility upgrades.
- $1.9 billion for vehicular bridge repairs.
- $142 million to build new electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
