DENVER — Zach Wilson took a beating on Sunday for the second time in three games.
The Broncos sacked him five times and hit him nine times. It would be easy to put all the blame on the offensive line, but it was clear in this one there was plenty of blame to go around. Receivers were not getting open, the line was not holding blocks long enough, and Wilson was not getting rid of the ball quick enough.
“He’s got to learn this is the NFL, you’ve got to get the ball out,” guard Greg Van Roten said. “You can’t hold on to it and try to make a play and throw it deep down the field. And we’ve got to protect him better. It starts with us up front.”
After major struggles in Week 1 in Carolina, the line showed improvement in Week 2 against the Patriots. But the group regressed on Sunday. It was not just the pass protection. They also failed to establish a run game (13 rushes, 43 yards).
“We felt anemic in the first half,” Van Roten said.
With Wilson and the offense struggling so badly, it is fair to wonder if this could have a negative effect on the young quarterback.
“I’m not worried,” defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins said. “At the end of the day, he’s having some growing pains along with the entire team. Obviously, his will be magnified because of the position he’s in, and being the No. 2 pick, the market we’re in. It all culminates into a bigger story than the entire team.”
Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims was inactive for the second straight game.
The 2020 second-round pick has fallen out of favor with the new coaching staff and now can’t even get on the field. The Jets were without Jamison Crowder, who is dealing with a groin injury, again. But it did not matter for Mims. The Jets went with Jeff Smith because of his special teams value over Mims. They also had Keelan Cole active. Cole had two catches in the game.
Mims is not the only 2020 draft pick who can’t find the field. Running back La’Mical Perine, a fourth-round pick, was inactive for the third straight week. On Sunday, Perine was inactive even though the Jets did not have Tevin Coleman, who was inactive due to an illness. The Jets had Josh Adams active over Perine, presumably because he can play special teams.
Rookie WR Elijah Moore suffered a concussion in the game. TE Tyler Kroft injured his ribs. … DT Quinnen Williams recorded his first sack of the season and finished the game with 1.5 sacks.
