A 19-year-old student was admitted to a psychiatric hospital after he tossed an egg at French President Emmanuel Macron during an international food fair in the city of Lyon, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Viral footage of the incident shows Macron walking through the crowd Monday when the egg bounced off him without breaking – prompting two bodyguards to get closer to the French leader.
“If he has something to tell me, then he can come,” Macron reportedly said after being struck at the International Catering, Hotel and Food Trade Fair, according to Agence France-Presse.
“I’ll go see him afterwards,” he added.
The unnamed suspect, who wasn’t previously known to authorities, was detained and investigated for “assault on a person in a position of public authority,” prosecutors said about his fowl play.
A psychiatric evaluation determined an “absence of discernment and need for hospitalization,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The incident was not the first time Macron was hit with an egg.
During his candidacy in 2017, an egg exploded against his head when he visited an agriculture fair in Paris.
More recently, a 28-year-old man slapped him in the face as he met well-wishers in the southern city of Valence in June.
The cheeky assailant, who told a court he sympathized with the anti-government “yellow vest” protests of 2018 and 2019, was sentenced to four months in the slammer.
France’s next presidential election is little over six months away and Macron, 43, who enjoys spending time meeting with the public, is expected to announce his candidacy.
