A photo of a firefighter sitting on a curb, reading a book to a little girl who was in a car wreck, has captured the heart of the internet.
The image was captured Wednesday night as emergency crews cleared up following an accident in Billings, Montana.
“Sweetest thing ever!” the photographer, Allie Marie Schmalz, posted on Facebook.
“This fireman is reading books to a little girl after being in an accident. First responders are amazing,” she added, ending the post with a heart emoji.
“He was so kind to her and gave her a little bag with goodies in it,” Schmalz said in the comments, after the firefighter was identified as Ryan Benton. “He sat there for a while reading to her and it was so awesome and precious.”
One commenter, Katy Benton, identified herself as the firefighter’s wife. “Makes me so proud when I get to see pictures like this!!” she posted.
The Billings Fire Department shared the photo on Instagram Thursday with the simple comment, “It’s the little things.”
Benton did not want to talk about the picture to the local news, but fellow firefighter Cameron Abell told Billings station KTVQ Benton took it upon himself to make the girl feel safe after the crash using a book from a bag donated by local businesses full of items to share with kids.
“Ryan’s a really humble guy and he’s probably going to kill me for kind of putting him in the spotlight,” Abell said. “But he did great work that day and he said he didn’t want to be on the interview because that’s his job and he’s just doing his job. And that’s kind of how we all feel. But we all know when somebody does something like that and gets spotlighted for it. It’s good to recognize their good work.”
