Mayor Bill de Blasio’s security detail was used for “political purposes” during his failed presidential campaign, running “errands” for their boss and his aides, and even helping his daughter move into Gracie Mansion, city investigators concluded in a damning new report.
The 49-page Department of Investigation probe found that $319,794 in city funds were spent on the security accompanying the mayor as he traveled during his longshot bid, and that the Executive Protection Unit members “occasionally” transported his campaign staffers while driving the mayor.
“Both reflect a use of NYPD resources for political purposes,” reads the DOI report.
In addition, the investigation found that “multiple” EPU members staffed the mayor’s daughter Chiara de Blasio’s move and that an NYPD van was used to bring some of her “belongings from her apartment to Gracie Mansion.”
While city investigators could not determine if de Blasio himself directed the NYPD to help his daughter move from Brooklyn to Gracie Mansion, they concluded that cops helping her transport personal items constituted a “misuse of NYPD resources for a personal benefit.”
Overall, the probe found de Blasio was involved in “potential violations of the New York City Conflicts of Interest Law, lapses in best practices, corruption vulnerabilities, and inefficient uses of public resources.”
A de Blasio rep claimed the probe was “unprofessional” and “inaccurate.”
“Intelligence and security experts should decide how to keep the mayor and his family safe, not civilian investigators. This unprofessional report purports to do the NYPD’s job for them, but with none of the relevant expertise — and without even interviewing the official who heads intelligence for the City,” said spokeswoman Danielle Filson in a statement.
“As a result, we are left with an inaccurate report, based on illegitimate assumptions and a naïve view of the complex security challenges facing elected officials today.”
The mayor came under scrutiny in 2019 for using public money to fund his security detail while traveling during his presidential bid. De Blasio also was ripped after the Executive Protection Unit reportedly helped move his daughter into Gracie Mansion in 2018. In addition, he has admitted that his son, Dante de Blasio, received rides from the NYPD while he studied at Yale University early in his father’s term.
