The helicopter pilot who died Sunday after crashing near Storm King Mountain north of New York City has been identified by police as Arthur Charych of Long Island.
Charych, 73, of Setauket, died after crashing about 50 miles north of New York City around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is underway.
Hiker Gavin Amacher of Wappinger was summiting the mountain with his girlfriend when they heard the helicopter “explode,” he told Mid Hudson News.
“We heard it fly overhead and then ‘boom,’ explosions and I heard it went down in the gully up there, hit some trees, exploded,” he said.
