Progressives furious over Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown’s write-in campaign victory over Democratic socialist India Walton are aiming to remove the incumbent from his position in the Democratic National Committee.
A campaign pushing Democrats to strip Brown of his post is being considered by Larry Cohen, the chair of the Bernie Sanders-affiliated leftist group Our Revolution, Politico reported.
“When you pull a stunt like this, somebody wins a primary, a working-class woman, and you go to every rich donor in both parties to fund a write-in campaign … it’s a disgrace,” Cohen told the publication.
Our Revolution’s executive director, Joseph Geevarghese, added: “You’ve got the establishment Democratic Party trying to block the path forward for progressives, and it’s incredibly challenging and frustrating for the grassroots.”
Walton stunned the political world by defeating four-term incumbent Brown in a low-turnout June Democratic primary.
The 39-year-old nurse and community activist picked up big-name endorsements from the party’s high-profile progressives, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
But after Brown dominated at the polls on election day, Walton conceded the following day.
Walton told Politico that she backs an effort to boot Brown from his DNC post.
“Not only do I support the DNC revoking Byron Brown’s post; I believe it would set a dangerous precedent not to,” she told the publication in a statement.
