On the heels of the New Zealand government’s announcement
last week that it is reopening its borders to some visitors sooner than
initially planned, Air New Zealand announced Tuesday its first nonstop flight
between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Auckland,
scheduled to launch Sept. 17. Bookings are immediately available, according to
the carrier.
Air New Zealand will operate the route three times a week,
year-round, with a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. The aircraft will be configured
with “more premium seats than other Dreamliners in the airline’s
fleet,” and offer 27 seats in Business Class, 33 in Premium Economy, 215
in Economy and 13 in Economy Skycouches—private economy seats that convert into
a couch after take-off, according to the carrier.
The route will be one of the longest in the world, at
approximately 17 hours and 35 minutes, according to Air New Zealand.
