Staying informed about the topics you care about, such as updates from your favorite Olympian, political news, or new recipes, is easy with Google Alerts. In this article, we’ll delve into the benefits of Google Alerts and how it can keep you connected and engaged with the latest news and developments.

Google Alerts is a free service available to Google account owners. A Google account is a username and password to access various Google products and services such as YouTube, Maps, Photos, and Google Ads. This benefit is not restricted to those with an example@gmail.com account. A Google account can be created using any email address.

With Google Alerts, you can curate a personalized list of articles based on your interests, hobbies, or the latest cultural trends. This tool saves you time by automatically sending relevant articles directly to your email inbox, eliminating the need for manual internet searches.

What you need to set up Google Alerts

You will need an internet browser such as Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge, a Google Account, and an email address to create a Google Alert. The steps to set up a Google Alert are straightforward and can be completed in just a few minutes.

The process of creating an alert.

How do I access Google Alerts?

  1. Open your desired internet browser and enter “https://www.google.com/alerts” into the URL bar.
  2. If you already have a Google account, sign in if prompted. You can create a new account using your current email address if you do not have a Google account.

  • In the search bar, type “Olympics.” As you type in keywords, a search is immediately performed to find websites that contain the words you’ve entered.
  • In the Alert preview results, click on an article of interest.
Check the Alert preview for relevant content.
  • Notice a new tab with the desired story is opened in the browser. Scan the article and its content for relevance.

  • Click the Google Alerts tab to return to the Alerts screen. If you are satisfied with the results, click the Create Alert button or if your results need refining, click on Show options.
You can create an alert or refine your searching using the Show options tab.

You can customize your Google Alerts by adjusting settings to suit your preferences. This includes determining how frequently you receive alerts, selecting specific sources for your updates, choosing the language of the content, and specifying the region from which you want the information. To do this, review and configure each option in the Google Alerts settings to tailor the notifications to your needs.

Options for setting alerts.

Examining the alert email

To view your Google Alerts, start by accessing your email inbox. Once there, you’ll find emails from Google Alerts containing updates based on your chosen keywords. Open the email that contains the alert you wish to view. Inside, you’ll see a list of links to the relevant articles. Click on the desired link to be redirected to the full article on the respective website. This process lets you easily stay updated with the latest information on exciting topics.

Editing Alerts

There are several ways to edit a Google Alert to better suit your needs. One method is to use your browser to navigate the Google Alerts page by entering “https://www.google.com/alerts” into the URL bar. This will take you to a list of all your current alerts, where you can click on the alert you wish to edit and make your desired changes.

Another convenient method is to edit the alert directly from the email you received. Open the email containing the alert, scroll to the bottom, and click the “Edit this alert” link. This link will redirect you to the Google Alerts settings page, where you can adjust the frequency, sources, language, region, and other options for that alert. This ensures you can easily manage and customize your alerts to stay updated on the topics most important to you.

In this example, I updated the keyword search and adjusted the frequency of the alerts. Specifically, I changed the keywords to better match my interests, ensuring that the alerts would provide more relevant information. Additionally, I modified the frequency setting to receive updates once a day. This will help with overcrowding my inbox with alerts. Refer to the figure below for a visual guide on how these changes were made.

Putting these steps into action

This article briefly reviewed how to create a Google Alert. Alerts can be created for any keyword or combination of words, making it a versatile tool for staying informed on various topics. What are you researching? Start using Google Alerts today to receive timely updates on your interests, and never miss out on important news and developments again.
