Part II: From Cyprus to the Grammys: Panos A. Panay’s journey as president of the Recording Academy

Part II – read Part I here

As Panos A. Panay’s story unfolds, his impact on the global music landscape becomes even more profound. In this next segment, we will delve into his pivotal role in launching the Open Music Initiative and examine how his leadership at the Recording Academy is propelling the industry toward a more equitable and technologically advanced future.

Reimagining the future of music rights: The birth of the open music initiative

Panos A. Panay co-founded the Open Music Initiative (OMI) with a visionary goal: to revolutionize the identification and compensation of rights holders within the music industry.

“I co-founded OMI because I felt and still feel that the way of identifying and remunerating rights holders in the industry is antiquated and inherently biased towards market share,” Panay explained. He recognized the growing number of people identifying as creators and aspiring to make a living in the digital age, and he believed that “those old systems have to be upgraded.”

Panay identified open-source platforms, technologies and protocols as crucial tools in leveling the playing field. “From a short-term perspective, OMI has not succeeded in the sense that all the old infrastructure is still very much in place. On a macro level, I believe in catalyzed conversations and inspirations for many an innovation that are just beginning to take hold in the AI era of the industry. For me, the book is not yet closed.”

The future of music and technology

As technology continues to evolve, so does its impact on the music industry. Panay envisions the future as a period of unpredictabilities.

“Undoubtedly, this is an era that will bring about unprecedented change in the industry, to the scale of 10 times what we experienced in the early 2000s with the first wave of internet-led disruption,” Panay asserted. He highlighted the historical relationship between technology and music, noting that technology “has always been both a disruptor and an enabler of the music industry for as long as there’s been one.”

Panay emphasized the ongoing technological evolution of technology and its implications for the music industry, drawing parallels with past innovations.

“Amplification, recording, broadcasting, multi-tracking, digital audio workstations, the internet have all catalyzed some form of disruption but then also of massive creative and market dynamics changes. Same is happening right now,” he stated, “which means that our role as an Academy that’s dedicated to the well-being of the creative community is to ensure that creators are prepared, protected but also primed to thrive amidst all this change.”

Leading the Recording Academy into a global era

As president of the Recording Academy, Panay has embraced the challenge of leading a prestigious institution into a new era.

“I am fortunate to work alongside a great CEO and partner Harvey Mason Jr. and alongside a great group of colleagues here at the Academy,” Panay said. He acknowledged the delicate balance needed between modernization and preserving the Academy’s core values. “Like every organization that’s been around for 66 years and entering a new era, the need to stimulate modernization while preserving the core is critical. But like with any renovation and expansion of a great and storied asset, one needs to be thoughtful, humble but yet confident in the direction that you want to take it.”

Panay considers this challenge a great honor, especially concerning the Grammy Awards. “I mean, how many times does one get the chance to work within an organization like the Recording Academy and steward a storied brand like the Grammys to its next phase?”

Beyond the Grammy Awards, the Recording Academy offers remarkable opportunities for young, emerging composers, artists, and music professionals through the GRAMMY U program.

“I am a massive fan of Jessie Allen, who leads GRAMMY U and who is an amazing asset to our organization and the music community,” Panay stated. He further elaborated, “I am in such awe of the program that in effect acts as one giant mentorship and access-building program for young college-aged students to enter and experience the industry. Any industry is only as good as the young people that it’s able to attract as that is the new blood that will reinvigorate, reimagine it, and sustain it. GRAMMY U is the industry’s platform for that.”

A global vision for the future

Looking ahead, Panay’s professional and personal aspirations align with a global vision for the Recording Academy. “The Recording Academy has been primarily a U.S.-based institution for the last 66 years. Music is global, creativity and talent are equally distributed around our world,” Panay observed. However, he noted that “there is not yet a global organization that advocates and advances and catalyzes the careers of all music creatives.”

Panay is resolute in his determinations to change that. “The Academy can and will be that institution because it has the DNA and platform and mission to provide that to the global creative community. Here, my personal and professional aspirations are one and the same. My work will not be done until we are able to provide that global platform, that global advocacy, support and, yes, celebratory body for all music makers no matter where they live or language they speak, perform or emote in.”
