The popcorn is ready and the wait is over: one of this summer’s most anticipated films is finally in theaters! “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this film marks his second directorial project with the MCU since “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
On Friday, July 31, the film premiered in the U.S. Set four years after the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Peter Parker continues his vigilante life as Spider-Man but once a mysterious threat targets the government agency, Department of Damage Control (DODC), and the people he loves, Peter must undergo one more transformation to unlock his full potential and save the day.
The film delivers gratifying cast performances, the visual styles, music scores and a compelling story capable of resonating with the audience. Even during the high-stakes action and suspense, Marvel films find ways of maintaining a wholesome, humorous undertone which parallels the original comics.
Stars of the film include Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Zendaya as Michelle “MJ” Jones-Watson, Jacobs Batalon as Ned Leeds, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher and more. Sadie Sink is also among the cast, but her role has been kept a secret since casting announcements.
After the explosive success of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Marvel fans, with many expectations, have been waiting to see this fourth Spider-Man film. They’ve also wondered if this film would deliver the same energy and storytelling like its three previous sequels. Peter Parker and Punisher’s volatile dynamic in the fourth film provide this perfect combination of excitement and storytelling.
For anyone who’s seen “Daredevil: Born Again,” Punisher’s appearance is one for excitement but no surprise. The TV series is a part of the MCU as seen in Daredevil’s cameo in “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Besides the undeniable chemistry lingering between MJ and Peter, it’s the unlikely pairing between Peter and Punisher which introduces a different dynamic into Peter’s life and is one of the best highlights in the film. As seen with Thor and Loki in “Thor: The Dark World” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” and then with Sam and Bucky in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Peter and Punisher’s constant bantering delivers the perfect combination of the person who challenges you the most while annoying you all the way through.
Throughout the past three films, Peter Parker has always had a mentor who also acts as a familial figure. First it was Tony Stark, then Happy, then it was his Aunt May. Now the torch has been passed to Punisher. But unlike the authoritative or soft approach these characters had with Peter Parker, Punisher’s chaos keeps the young vigilante on his feet.
The two characters are polar opposites starting in the first scene. Its foreshadowed of what began as an annoying presence inferencing in their work soon became a major clash of methods. Spiderman fights to protect while Punisher believes lethal force is the best way to stop criminals.
Then their relationship develops into an understanding. Punisher offers a harsh outlook at the dark side of vigilante life, forcing Peter Parker to define the kind of hero he wants to be now that his loved ones don’t remember him. One can even argue Punisher shared a rough older brother dynamic with Peter Parker.
For die-hard Marvel fans, especially those of the “Spiderman” series, this movie is worth seeing! You can see “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” now in theaters. Which means the only Marvel film expected to release later this year remains: “Avengers: Doomsday.”
