Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will celebrate his 100th birthday early in the fall, the first president to reach that age. Carter has been receiving in-home hospice care in Plains, Ga., since 2023.
Jimmy Carter’s background
James Earl Carter Jr. was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Ga., to parents James Earl Carter Sr. and Lillian Gordy Carter. He served as America’s 39th president from 1977 to 1981.
Prior to his presidency, Carter held the position of the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975 and served as a Georgia state senator from 1963 to 1967. In December 1974, he declared his candidacy for president. In July 1976, Carter secured his party’s nomination on the initial ballot at the Democratic National Convention and was inaugurated as president Jan. 20, 1977.
During his presidency, Carter faced substantial challenges, including inflation, the energy crisis, the war in Afghanistan and the Iran hostage crisis. In 2002, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in finding peaceful resolutions to international conflicts.
Carter is celebrated for his support of civil rights, which had a significant impact on his early political career in Georgia. Additionally, he championed government efficiency through civil service reform and pushed for the deregulation of the trucking and airline industries.
Even at the age of 99, Carter continues to engage in various endeavors. The Jimmy Carter National Historical Park and Preservation District encompasses more than 20 structures of importance in his life.

Recently, an auction of items from Carter managed to raise a total of more than $2.8 million for the Carter Center, a 501(c)(3) devoted to preventing and resolving global conflicts, enhancing freedom and democracy and improving health.
The winning bids for the auction have been concluded and the CEO of the Center, Paige Alexander expressed her gratitude towards the support that was invested in the auction event.
“We are incredibly grateful for the continued generosity and commitment of our loyal supporters. These contributions will advance The Carter Center’s ongoing work to promote peace and health around the world,” said Alexander.
Carter sympathizes with Donald Trump
Following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania Saturday, the Carter Center extended its sympathies and urged the peaceful expression of political opinions.
